Opening a TRACE File
The TRACE file type is primarily associated with JDK.
What is a TRACE file?
How can I open a TRACE file?
You need a suitable software like JDK to open a TRACE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TRACE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TRACE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

TRACE file format:
To view or edit TRACE files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the TRACE files:
TRACE is one of the most common file extensions and does not have a uniform file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all TRACE files start with the bytes , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. TRACE files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 950 KB - 1 MB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. info and gsvc. A usual file name is ad.trace or ad_svc.trace.
- 10% of all TRACE files start with the magic bytes SLOWó, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 31 KB to 28 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The keywords SLOW, main, ([Ljava/lang/String;)V, ZygoteInit.java, com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit and com.android.internal.os.RuntimeInit$MethodAndArg are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are cpu-art-20180601.trace. These files can be linked to screen and start.
The remaining 75% of all TRACE files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. Traces scene, UTF-16 (LE), .NET, JSON, XML, config, info, HTTP, version, Log, trace and ccb. The category is javaws, krnl, cisco, profile, error or read. If you want to find out what your TRACE file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a trace trace log is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TRACE files
- Associate the TRACE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open trace logs. Because only the current version supports the latest TRACE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available JDK update.
- To make sure that your TRACE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TRACE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
