Opening a CONF File

The CONF file type is primarily associated with Windows.

CONFFile Extension CONF
File extension: CONF
File type:  Configuration file

What is a CONF file?

CONF files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. CONF is the extension used by a configuration file (commonly called config files) that are used by various server processes and software applications on different operating systems. CONF files are used to configure the parameters and settings for software. The frequency with which these files are used varies from program to program. While some programs only read their configuration files at startup, others check the configuration files for changes periodically. CONF files are in the simple text format, and can therefore be opened using a basic text editor. They include application-specific markup. Some software have tools to create, modify, and verify the syntax of their configuration files. These tools may have graphical interfaces to make editing easier. Other applications may require users to create and modify files manually using a text editor. Some operating systems may have their own graphical interfaces for editing CONF files such as YaST or debconf.

How to open a CONF file

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a CONF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CONF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CONF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
