All about TZ Files
The TZ file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is a TZ file?
- The TZ Compression Format: This format is based on the LZW encoding algorithm and is known for its fast compression. It also performs well with less memory usage than modern compression formats. This however happens at cost of a much lower compression ratio than formats such as ZIP or GZIP.
- Adoption: Though these files are mainly found on Linux and Unix-based systems, TZ files can be read, written, edited and converted even on MacOS and Windows-based systems through decompressing utilities such as WinZip or Micro Stuffit Deluxe. On Unix-based systems, they can be opened using simple and natively installed programs like tar and gunzip.
How do you open TZ files?
You need a suitable software like WinZip to open a TZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

TZ file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open TZ files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the TZ files:
The TZ file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all TZ files internally use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one TZ file. Such a ZIP file contains 1 to 2 files. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. TZ files are between 59 KB and 100 MB in size. A usual file name is tvai.tz. Files like these are about fnet, fgnet and gnet.
- 15% of all TZ files use the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. They consist of unreadable binary data. TZ files are between 4 KB and 68 MB in size. The following filename is common: lab1samples.tz or RoG_train_data.tar.tz. These files can be linked to samples, train and data.
The remaining 60% of all TZ files are files with no common format, the following 7 formats exist: TimeZone data, 7z and beeglivesex. Often described as gcode, list, host or domain. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your TZ file!

a tz compressed archive file is a special file format by Corel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TZ files
- Associate the TZ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest TZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available WinZip update.
- To make sure that your TZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
