What is a UNC file

UNC files mostly belong to SQLite. An UNC file can serve two purposes.

  • SQLite Database File: These files follow an SQL structure and use the SQLite engine to manage relational data. They can be opened with tools like a SQLite browser. See more at SQLite's website.
  • Soil Test Data File: These files store data from unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests. They are used in geotechnical engineering to record soil behavior. More details are available at GeoEngineer.

FilExt.com notes: Check the file header to decide which type is in use. A SQLite file usually starts with 'SQLite format 3'. Adjust the extension if needed and use the proper software to open it.

How do you open UNC files?

You need a suitable software like SQLite to open a UNC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your UNC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a UNC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert UNC files:

  1. SQLite
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. UNC files are often referred to as SQLite databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (Output Folder) by Microsoft Corporation
Note: This is a folder extension and not a file extension. The folder name should be USMT2.UNC. The folder itself may be a compressed file but should show up as a folder in Windows Explorer. You can use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" in Windows XP to transfer settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer and for Microsoft Outlook Express. You can also use this wizard to transfer desktop settings, display settings, dial-up connections, and other types of settings. To get to the wizard in Windows XP: Start | Program Files | Accessories | System Tools | Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.   This file format is classified as Archive.
