What is a VGM file?

How to open a VGM file

You need a suitable software like VGMPlay to open a VGM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. The VGM file extension is not common and mainly uses a defined VGM format. The following file formats are most commonly found in VGM files:

• 80% of all VGM files are associated with Video Game Music format. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 290 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords Vgm are typical for these files. The following filename is common: BotB 28555 going shopping.vgm or SONIC.EXE - Hill Act 1.vgm. Files like these have the following tags: music, botb, shopping, going, theme and zone.
• 10% of all VGM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " MGV ELR " at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 92 bytes to 220 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MGV ELR and BBZN.
