All about VLX Files
The VLX file type is primarily associated with AutoCAD.
What is a VLX file?
These files are produced by the Visual LISP compiler, which converts AutoLISP source code into a binary format that AutoCAD can load quickly. This process also protects the underlying source from easy access.
To use a VLX file, load it into AutoCAD using the APPLOAD command.
How to open VLX files
You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open a VLX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VLX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VLX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VLX files:
- AutoCAD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VLX files are often referred to as AutoCAD cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AutoCAD (AutoLISP Macro Application) by Autodesk, Inc.VLX files are compiled AutoLISP files that were created with Visual LISP. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 56 52 54 4C 49 42 2D, ASCII: VRTLIB-.
VLX file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the VLX files produces the following result:
The VLX file extension is quite widespread and mainly uses a special format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 97% of all VLX files are associated with Visual LISP Application. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 17 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. LOAD, active-x, fas, protected, (:separate-namespace) (:load-file-list, FAS4-FILE ; Do not change it!, VRTLIB-1 and webupdate. Files like these are sometimes connected to click, text, acad, auto, linout, trial, insertc, dimcurve and plot.
All other VLX files (3%) have no consistent format. These files sometimes refer to explodeall, area, layouts, splitarea, mlayers or lisp. You can get all the details of your VLX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .vlx file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for VLX File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a vlx compiled AutoLISP routine is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VLX files
- Associate the VLX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compiled autolisp routines. Because only the current version supports the latest VLX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AutoCAD update.
- To make sure that your VLX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .VLX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
