What is a VMI file

VMI files mostly belong to Daz Studio.

This file may serve one of several functions. In one common use, a VMI file is a Daz3D morph file. It stores data on how a 3D character is adjusted in Daz Studio and similar 3D modeling software. The file often uses a JSON structure to keep track of morph settings that change a digital avatar's shape or expressions.

To find out what program is needed to open VMI files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The VMI file extension is not common and covers a large number of different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all VMI files start with the bytes AD crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 100 bytes to 100 bytes in size. The files contain the following words: EDITOR, ADD@Planetweb Browser and Planetweb, Inc. An example of a file name is 187.VMI or EDITOR2.VMI.
• 15% of all VMI files save the data in JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 230 bytes to 63 KB in size, with a median of 31 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as "max" : "1", displayName, numDeltas, region, group and "min" : "0". Such VMI files store data about body.
