Opening VRF Files
The VRF file type is primarily associated with Ventrilo.
What is a VRF file?
One type is a Ventrilo voice recording file used to record voice chat sessions. This file stores audio from communications and is best opened with the Ventrilo application or compatible audio players.
Another type is a video recording file that may use the CAP format. This version is linked with Video Freezer technology and is sometimes called a Vision Research File associated with DIAdem. More details about this variation can be found here.
How to open a VRF file
You need a suitable software like Ventrilo to open a VRF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VRF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VRF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VRF format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the VRF files produces the following result:
The VRF file extension is quite widespread and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 95% of all VRF files have the same signature ÝïôC. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 19 MB and 71 MB in size. The file type was created recently. These files are often associated with addf, bffa, ccbe, dbef, ecdf, fccf and ffda.
- 2% of all VRF files belong to Ventrilo audio recording. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 19 KB and 9 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: VENTRECD and WIN32. 20180601.vrf is a typical file name.
All other VRF files (3%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. CAP, GZIP and SQL. They are often associated with mssp or floor. Just click the "Choose your .vrf file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your VRF file is.

How to solve problems with VRF files
- Associate the VRF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open recording files. Because only the current version supports the latest VRF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Ventrilo update.
- To make sure that your VRF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
