What is a VSDX file?

VSDX files mostly belong to Visio by Microsoft. VSDX is the filename extension of files containing drawings created with the 2013 and higher editions of Visio vector graphics editor. VSDX files created with Visio contain technical drawings such as network diagrams, database transaction models, business process models, and code execution steps etc. These diagrams are saved as vector graphics in a series of XML files compressed into a ZIP archive using Open Packaging Conventions single container file technology. So, a VSD file is actually a ZIP file with a different filename extension. The VSDX drawing container-file is organized into folders, an EMF thumbnail, and XML/XML.RELS files that make up the pages, window, content types, and themes used in a drawing. The Internet media type for VSDX drawings are application/vnd.visio2013 and application/vnd.visio.

How can I open a VSDX file?

You need a suitable software like Visio to open a VSDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. • 1% of all VSDX files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The app name of VSDX files is Microsoft Visio. The unique Windows component object identifier is 00021a14-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 54 KB to 3 MB in size.
