What is a VSD file

VSD files mostly belong to Visio by Microsoft. VSD is the filename extension of documents containing technical drawings created with the 2003, 2007, and 2010 editions of Visio vector graphics editor. The contents of these VSD files include text, shapes, text, objects, and other information required to render drawings such as flowcharts, charts, organizational charts, business process models (e.g. database design models), network diagrams etc. VSD files are saved in the binary Compound Document file format used by most Office applications. Apart from Visio, vector graphics editors such as FlowCharter, Draw, and CorelDRAW can import and display VSD drawings. The Internet media types associated with VSD files are image/x-vsd, application/visio.drawing, application/vsd, application/x-visio, and application/vnd.visio.

How do you open VSD files?

You need a suitable software like Visio to open a VSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert VSD files to SVG, PDF, JPG, PNG, ...

VSD file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the VSD files is as follows:

VSD is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a defined VSD format. The file formats most commonly found in VSD files are:

• 97% of all VSD files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). Each VSD file has an application name, which is Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office Word. There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is 00021a14-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00021a13-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections which are named like SummaryInformation, VisioDocument, DocumentSummaryInformation and VisioInformation. The files are 83 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 530 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Files like these have the following tags: flow, diagram, chart, plan, layout, visio, drawings and diagrama.
• 1% of all VSD files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one VSD file. VSD files contain from 8 to 30 compressed files. File names inside are always [Content_Types].xml, content.xml, meta.xml, mimetype, settings.xml, styles.xml, \Configurations2\, \META-INF\manifest.xml and \Thumbnails\thumbnail.png. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 43 KB to 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. mimetypeapplication/vnd.oasis.opendocument.graphicsPK, Configurations2/PK and styles.xml.
