All about VTM Files
The VTM file type is primarily associated with ParaView.
What is a VTM file?
This file format allows multiple VTK datasets to be grouped together, making it easier to manage complex simulation or scientific visualization data.
Key details as outlined by FilExt.com include:
How to open a VTM file
You need a suitable software like ParaView to open a VTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VTM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VTM files:
- ParaView
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VTM files are often referred to as ParaView data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Cold Fusion Studio Query
VTM file extension format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the VTM files looks like this:
VTM is not a common file extension and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all VTM files are associated with VTK XML MultiBlockDataSet files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 740 bytes in size and range from 280 bytes to 2 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The files contain the following words: vtkMultiBlockDataSet, header_type, version="1.0" byte_order="LittleEndian", <VTKFile type="vtkMultiBlockDataSet", <?xml version="1.0"?>, compressor, vtkZLibDataCompressor, <DataSet index=, UInt64 and name. An example of a file name is sim_0.vtm.
The remaining 40% of all VTM files are different files with different signatures. Tagged as optimization, rtav, database, settings or cavity. If you want to find out which format your VTM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .vtm file to analyze".
Technical Data for VTM File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a vtm data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VTM files
- Associate the VTM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest VTM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ParaView update.
- To make sure that your VTM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .VTM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
