What is a VTT file?

VTT files mostly belong to Chrome by Google. VTT filename extension is associated text files containing video subtitles written in with WebVTT standard for displaying timed text (closed captions) during video playback. Such VTT files contain data such as the subtitle type, captions, language, subtitle text, speaker name, chapters for content navigation, video descriptions, start/end timecodes for each block of text, and a video/audio metadata stored as text in the following form:

VTT subtitles are mainly used in HTML5 videos embedded in web browsers. The file's URL or path is set as the value of the src attribute of the <track> tag of a video. VT Pro-e, a software for creating the graphical user interface (GUI) of touchscreen devices, saves graphic user interface design projects in VTT files.

How to open a VTT file

You need a suitable software like Chrome to open a VTT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VTT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VTT file directly in the browser:. How to extract texts from VTT files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

1. To do so, click the "Choose your .vtt file to view" button above.

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the VTT files:

VTT is a very common file type and primarily uses a special format that can be read by various programs. The file formats most commonly found in VTT files are:

• 90% of all VTT files belong to Video Text Tracks. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 100 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. WEBVTT. A common filename is GMT20180601_Recording.transcript.vtt. Such VTT files store data about movie, transcript, recording, auto, generated, caption, introduction, course and meeting.
• 6% of all VTT files are associated with Video Text Tracks files, which internally utilize the well-known UTF-8 format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 890 bytes to 52 KB. The files contain the following words: WEBVTT. Such files sometimes refer to movie, subtitle, video, overview, tools, project, welcome and intro.

The remaining 4% of all VTT files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. XML. They are often associated with subtitles, what, captions, interview, this or your.
