What is a VRT file?

VRT files mostly belong to GDAL by GDAL Developers. A VRT file is a 3D virtual world saved in the OGR Virtual Format used by the GDAL translator library for geospatial raster and vector datasets. Such a 3D virtual world is saved as a raster or vector dataset. A VRT file saved as a vector dataset is written in Extensible Markup Language (XML). It contains a collection of textures, sources, mappings, and layers which makeup a virtual scene. Another type of VRT file is a profile definition used by Civil 3D civil structure design and documentation software.

How to open VRT files

You need a suitable software like GDAL to open a VRT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VRT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VRT file directly in the browser:. How to extract texts from VRT files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. VRT is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 80% of all VRT files are GDAL Virtual Format files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 600 bytes and 530 KB in size. It is a modern file type. The keywords VRTDataset rasterXSize, rasterYSize, DATUM, GEOGCS, SPHEROID, 6378137, PROJCS, WGS_1984, AUTHORITY, 257223563, EPSG and WGS 84 are typical for these files. These files can be linked to srtm, lroc, depth, mosaik, quickmap, mosaic, built and mean.
• 7% of all VRT files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one VRT file. Most often they are 1 to 8 compressed files. Common included file names are template.json and \media\uc-0010-simple-textbox.html. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The average file size is 9 KB with most files being between 2 KB and 110 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as json, contain, globalCaptionStyle, template, version, videoRatio, videoTransform, videoTransformFillType and WIDE_SCREEN. The file name -_01.vrt or template1.vrt is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: movie, bvrw, well, vrew and company.

All other VRT files (13%) have no consistent format, such as SuperScape world/scene data, SQL, UTF-16 (LE) and VRT.
