WIC file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the WIC files produces the following result:
WIC is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all WIC files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FA B8 00 10 8E D0 BC 00 B0 B8" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 70 MB to 1 GB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. These files can be linked to image, rootfs, raspberrypi, core, venus, minimal, multimedia and base.
- 5% of all WIC files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: e2efc625-f204-11d0-8e79-00a024e1383c. These files are not plain text files, so they also contain binary data. The files are often between 8 KB and 13 KB in size.
All other WIC files (30%) have different formats. Tagged as corei, intel, petalinux, nitrogen, sdimage, webos or demo. If you want to find out which format your WIC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .wic file to view".

How to solve problems with WIC files
- Associate the WIC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest WIC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available wic-create update.
- To make sure that your WIC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
