What is a WSF file

WSF files mostly belong to WScript by Microsoft. A WSF file is a script written in one or more scripting languages that can be executed by Windows Script Host (WScript or CScript). It contains XML-encoded markup and embedded/referenced JScript, Perl, Python, Object REXX, and/or VBScript code. WSF is short for Windows Script File, it allows system administrators and developers to incorporate scripts written in multiple languages into a single module. Each script embedded in a WSF file is wrapped in <script></script> tags. A code/text editor may be used to edit a WSF script because its contents are saved as text. Malicious actors may hide malware in WSF files.

You need a suitable software like WScript to open a WSF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. WSF file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The file type with the extension 'WSF' includes very many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 10% of all WSF files are associated with Windows Script File. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are 430 bytes to 210 KB in size, with a median of 7 KB. The files contain the following words: <script language="VBScript">, <job> and job id.
• 20% of all WSF files belong to Windows Script File. The files are using the common file format XML.
