.XLTM File Won't Open? Here is What You Can Do
Because .XLTM files can come from different programs, they aren't universally openable.
- Identify the Source: Receiving this from an accountant's financial report or an automated invoice workflow strongly suggests a Microsoft Excel macro-enabled workbook template.
- Check the Header: Inspect the file's first bytes using a hex viewer or text editor:
PK(magic bytes50 4B) indicates a ZIP-based Office Open XML format.- Readable XML tags confirm a structured spreadsheet.
- Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required to execute macros; try Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or WPS Office, or ask the sender if uncertain.
- Use this Webpage: Drag and drop the file into our viewer to detect the format, extract readable text or metadata, and preview it when possible.
XLTM file format:
To view or edit XLTM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the XLTM files produces the following result:
The XLTM file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in XLTM files are:
- 85% of all XLTM files use the ZIP format, i.e. an XLTM file contains several compressed files. The average file count is 34 with most XLTM files containing between 14 - 110 compressed files. File names are e.g. [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.xml.rels, \xl\calcChain.xml, \xl\drawings\drawing1.xml, \xl\sharedStrings.xml, \xl\styles.xml, \xl\vbaProject.bin and \xl\workbook.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are often between 20 KB and 960 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: [Content_Types].xml. These files are attributed to template, sheet, produktionskostnadskalkyl, automatizada, expandida, addition, analysis, practice, report, skills, tabela, fire and free.
- 6% of all XLTM files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The app name of an XLTM file is Microsoft Excel. The file contains sections that are named something like DataSpaces and EncryptedPackage. The files are often between 52 KB and 2 MB in size.
All the rest of the XLTM files (9%) have different formats. Often described as tool. If you want to find out which format your XLTM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xltm file to view".
