What is an XLTX file?

XLTX files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLTX file is a workbook (spreadsheet) template bundled with Excel or created by a user. The format was introduced in Excel 2007 and adopted as the primary format for saving a template in Excel 2010. An XLTX file contains spreadsheet placeholder data which serves as scaffolding for creating a new XLSX workbook. Like XLSX files, an XLTX template is saved in Office Open XML format. For this reason, such a spreadsheet template is actually a compressed ZIP archive containing XML-encoded data, settings, embedded images/objects, and metadata. This format does not support Visual Basic for Application macros.

For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. • 90% of all XLTX files are based on the zip format, that is, an XLTX file includes multiple compressed files. Most often they are 10 to 50 compressed files. Customary file names are [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.xml.rels, \xl\calcChain.xml, \xl\sharedStrings.xml, \xl\styles.xml, \xl\theme\theme1.xml, \xl\workbook.xml and \xl\worksheets\sheet1.xml. • 2% of all XLTX files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 140 KB.
