All about ZX Files
The ZX file type is primarily associated with AutoCAD.
What is a ZX file?
In one case, the file is a Boardview file that comes from work done in AutoCAD. It stores design data for circuit board layouts. Some versions of this file are also used as ZX Spectrum compressed files, meant for use with ZX Spectrum Emulator tools.
In another case, a ZX file is a project file from the TubesT system. This file contains nesting data used for tube cutting processes and is built on the ZIP compression format.

How to open a ZX file
You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open a ZX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ZX files:
- AutoCAD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ZX files are often referred to as AutoCAD cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

ZX file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ZX files comes to the following conclusion:
As a file extension, ZX isn't very common and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all ZX files use the ZIP format, the ZX file contains a number of compressed files. A ZX file contains 26 to 34 files, the average being 32. Common included file names are content.xml, info.xml, sign, \Configs\content.xml, \Configs\sign, \Curves\content.xml, \Curves\data.bin, \Curves\sign, \Geometrys\content.xml, \Geometrys\data.bin, \Geometrys\sign, \Layers\content.xml, \Layers\sign, \Portions\content.xml, \Portions\data.bin, \Portions\sign, \Segments\content.xml, \Segments\data.bin, \Segments\sign, \Technical\ and \Viewports\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. A typical file size is 170 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as info.xml. Files like these have the following tags: nest, tube, width, round, square, rect, height and curva.
- 15% of all ZX files are using the well-known AutoCAD file format to store the data. The AutoCAD format contains 2D and 3D vector graphics created by CAD (computer-aided design) programs. Drafters, architects, and engineers use this format to develop design sketches. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 490 KB to 490 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as AC1018. Examples of file names are DA0R05MB8D2 REV D.ZX.
All the rest of the ZX files (35%) have different formats, often e.g. zXZ and JZJZ. Often described as license. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ZX file!
Technical Data for ZX File Extension
a zx project file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ZX files
- Associate the ZX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AutoCAD update.
- To make sure that your ZX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ZX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
