Opening OTF Files
The OTF file type is primarily associated with OpenOffice/StarOffice.
What is an OTF file
The OTF file format uses structure starts (at byte 0 if the file has only one font) with a table directory as the top-level container for other tables in the file. Otherwise, it's at the TTCHeader's location. Each table record has Tag(identifier), uint32(checksum), Offset32(offset), uint32(the table's length) as fields. In OTF font files, each table must be represented by names referred to as tags.
This format uses Big Endian data types such as int8, int16, int32 fixed, FWORD, UFWORD, LONGDATETIME, Offset16, Offset32, Tag, F2DOT14, Version16Dot16, int16, uint8, uint16, uint24, uint32. It supports extra characters such as ligatures, small caps or alternative characters, making it excellent for design. OTF font files can contain over 65, 500 glyphs.
To create new font files, you need special software designed for typography design which include PaintFont, FontStruct, Fontself, Metaflop, and Font Forge.
To open OTF font files on Windows or Unix systems, several methods can be used but the quickest is to simply double-click the files and let the operating system open it for you. Aalternatively, right-click on the file and Open or Install. When opened, the font will present a button to install it.
Other formats associated with OTF include TFF, CFF, OTD, WOFF, DFONT, CID, OCF, EOT, FNT, AMFM, ACFM, GTF, MMM, PFA, TPF, and TTC.
