What is a TTF file?

TTF files mostly belong to Font Book by Apple. A TTF file is a resolution-independent font created using TrueType font specifications. The contents of this file are stored as binary data representing a sequence table comprising a series of uint32 tags. TrueType format was developed by Apple. It was first used on classic macOS and Windows computers. At the time of its release, TTF format offered the advantage of using Bezier curves and straight line segments to render character glyphs (outlines). This approach was mathematically simpler and faster to process. Another type of TTF file contains tabular text used by Quartus II CPLD and FPGA design software.

How to open a TTF file

You need a suitable software like Font Book to open a TTF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. 95% of all TTF files are associated with TrueType Font. They consist of unreadable binary data. TTF files are between 15 KB and 360 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as 6hhea, head, cmap, $hmtx, glyf, loca, cvt, gasp, maxp and fpgm. 1% of all TTF files have the same signature OTTO. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 69 KB with most files being between 9 KB and 130 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. OTTO, 6hhea, $hmtx, GPOS, `cmap, GDEF, head, maxp, name, CFF, DSIG and GSUB.
