Opening an ARFF File
The ARFF file type is primarily associated with Weka.
What is an ARFF file?
- Main Use: ARFF files are ASCII text files that describe a list of instances with common attributes. These documents are fed into the Weka machine learning software. ARFF files are made up of two distinct sections. Header information is present in the first section which has details on the name of the relations, attribute lists, and their types. The relation name is denoted by the first line in the ARFF file. The attribute declarations follow the relation name using an ordered sequence of @attribute statements. Every attribute belonging to the data set is denoted by a separate @attribute statement that carries the attribute name and data type. The second section of the ARFF file is the Data section. This section consists of the data declaration line and the actual instance lines. The data declaration line is a single line which denotes the beginning of the file's data section. Each instance that follows this line is denoted using a single line, with carriage returns notifying the instance has ended.
- Adoption: Weka machine learning software is written in Java language and is available under the GNU General Public License. ARFF files are used to distribute many popular machine learning datasets with Weka software in the $WEKAHOME/data directory.
How to open ARFF files
You need a suitable software like Weka to open an ARFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ARFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ARFF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ARFF files:
- Weka by University of Waikato
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ARFF files are often referred to as Weka developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- TensorFlow (Machine Learning data set) by Google BrainTensorFlow is a free, open-source platform that provides a set of tools, libraries and community resources which allow users to build and deploy machine learning applications. The ARFF extension is for the Attribute-Relation File Format and it stores data that describes a list of instances that have a shared set of attributes. This file format is classified as Developer. ARFF file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ARFF files comes to the following conclusion:
The ARFF extension is very commonly used. This ARFF file itself is among the most popular common file types and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 97% of all ARFF files belong to Attribute-Relation File Format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 3 KB to 5 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The following keywords are characteristic: relation, numeric and attribute. The file name 1year.arff is typical for these files. These files are attributed to data, dataset, training, year, phishing, autism, weather, initial and amazon.
All other ARFF files (3%) have different formats. These files sometimes refer to train, disease, chronic, kidney, messidor, adult or weka. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ARFF file!
Technical Data for ARFF File Extension
an arff Machine Learning data set is a special file format by University of Waikato and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ARFF files
- Associate the ARFF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open machine learning data sets. Because only the current version supports the latest ARFF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the University of Waikato manufacturer website after an available Weka update.
- To make sure that your ARFF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
