How to open ARTICLE files

You need a suitable software like Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to open an ARTICLE file. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. The ARTICLE file extension is rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all ARTICLE files save the data in PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 300 KB with most files being between 39 KB and 680 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. An example of a file name is 20180601.article.
• 30% of all ARTICLE files use ZIP compression, multiple files are compressed and combined into one ARTICLE file. The average file count is 18 with most ARTICLE files containing between 6 - 30 compressed files. Common included file names are Article.xml, manifest.xml, mimetype and \META-INF\pkgproperties.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 61 KB to 25 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Article.xml and mimetypeapplication/vnd.adobe.folio+zipPK. The file name Untitled-1.article is typical for these files.
