Opening P8 Files

The P8 file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.

P8File Extension P8
File extension: P8
File type:  cryptographic key file

What is a P8 file?

P8 files mostly belong to OpenSSL.

Primary Use: Private Cryptographic Key File: The majority of P8 files are used as private cryptographic key files in security applications. These files store encoded key data, which is managed through tools such as OpenSSL. If you open one in a text editor, you might see a block of seemingly random text along with header and footer markers.

Alternative Use: Pico-8 Game Cartridge
A small percentage of P8 files are game cartridges for the Pico-8 fantasy console. In this context, the file contains game code, graphics, and sometimes audio data. To run a Pico-8 cartridge, you need the Pico-8 runtime, which is detailed on the Pico-8 webpage.

  • Secure Key Files: Designed for encryption and secure communications.
  • Game Cartridges: Hold complete game projects for the Pico-8 console.

FilExt.com note: These uses are distinct; the key file must be handled with strict security, while the game cartridge is intended for running within a specific game environment.

How to open P8 files

You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a P8 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your P8 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a P8 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert P8 files:

  1. OpenSSL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. P8 files are often referred to as OpenSSL data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Apple II operating system

P8 file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the P8 files:

The P8 extension is very commonly found and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 2% of all P8 files are files with no common format, often, for example, PICO-8 cartridge. If you want to find out which format your P8 file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .p8 file to view".

How to solve problems with P8 files

  • Associate the P8 file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open cryptographic key files. Because only the current version supports the latest P8 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
  • To make sure that your P8 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
