Opening an AVL File
The AVL file type is primarily associated with Astro-Vision LifeSigns.
What is an AVL file?
Another use of the AVL file is as an ArcView legend file in GIS. This version holds legend settings for maps within ArcView GIS. For more about this, see the ESRI ArcGIS overview.
A third variant is the Avid Log File, which functions as a GPS data file. This version records log details that can be used with programs such as Garmin BaseCamp.

AVL file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the AVL files comes to the following conclusion:
The AVL file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all AVL files start with the bytes "R3","1001"," crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. AVL files are between 130 bytes and 150 bytes in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Standard Time and MALE. These files are attributed to person-related data.
- 20% of all AVL files are associated with ArcView Legend. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The files are on average 5 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 19 KB. The files contain the following words: "Legend", (Legend.2, (ODB.1, Class, ClassType, FirstRootClassName, LegType, Roots, Symbols, Version, SymType and FieldNames. Examples of file names are corine.AVL.
The remaining 20% of all AVL files are different files with different signatures, such as VOLT. They are often associated with ngptb. If you want to find out what your AVL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for AVL File Extension
an avl data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with AVL files
- Associate the AVL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest AVL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Astro-Vision LifeSigns update.
- To make sure that your AVL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AVL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
