What is a BZIP file?

BZIP files mostly belong to bzip2 by Julian Seward. BZIP is a lossless compression file format associated with BZIP compression software. It is popularly referred to by the extension BZ.

Compression: BZ files are obtained by employing block-sorting compression methods. BZ files use larger block sizes but produce better compression ratios than LHA, ZIP, LZX and GZIP. The information is compressed using the Arithmetic coding technique, once the files of interest are prepared for compression using the Burrows-Wheeler transform.
Features: When the usage of Arithmetic coding technique lead to a patent violation, BZIP2 software replaced BZIP. BZ2 extension is given to BZIP2 compressed files. BZIP does not have archiving capabilities. If the data contains multiple files, they need to be archived separately into a single file by using an archiving tool. Since BZIP tool has been withdrawn, it is not possible to compress files into BZ file format anymore.
Adoption: In Linux, TBZ (filename.tar.bz) files can be extracted by decompressing the TBZ file into a TAR file using the native bzip2 tool followed by unarchiving it. In Windows, BZIP2 and 7-Zip can be used to unpack BZ files.

How to open a BZIP file

You need a suitable software like bzip2 to open a BZIP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
