All about CBL Files
The CBL file type is primarily associated with CABLABEL R2+.
What is a CBL file?
The CBL extension is not unique to one purpose. In its primary use, it is a file that stores label design data. These files use the Microsoft Compound format to hold layout information, text, images, and other printing instructions. This type of file is created and managed by CABLABEL R2+ software. For more details on label design, you may visit the CAB Marking page.
Other variations of CBL files include those used as Chinese Chess Game Files or as Mitsubishi PLC program files (handled by software like CCBridgeLibrary). In these cases the file stores game moves or program logic in a custom structure.

How to open a CBL file
You need a suitable software like CABLABEL R2+ to open a CBL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CBL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CBL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CBL files:
- CABLABEL R2+
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CBL files are often referred to as CABLABEL R2+ page layouts because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

- PDP-10The PDP-10 was a mainframe computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s; the name stands for Programmed Data Processor model 10. The PDP-10 was eventually eclipsed by the VAX supermini machines. The PDP-10 product line cancellation was announced in 1983. Compilers output REL files. Related links: Wikipedia PDP-10 Page

CBL format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the CBL files:
The CBL file type covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 30% of all CBL files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). Each CBL file has an application name, which is CABLABEL R2+ or Microsoft Excel. The internal containers are called DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation, Contents, Database, Form, Format, General, Objects, Printer, RfTagObject, Variables and BackGround. CBL files can be up to 5 MB in size, but are often around 41 KB - 700 KB. The file type is old but is used even today.
- 8% of all CBL files have the same signature CCBridge. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 110 KB to 1 MB. The files contain the following words: CCBridgeLibrary.
The remaining 62% of all CBL files are files with no common format, such as COBOL source, XML, IDENTIFICATION and File. Tagged as mbgfnx, ehpc, code, cartones, marvel or terr. If you want to find out which format your CBL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cbl file to analyze".

a cbl compound design file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CBL files
- Associate the CBL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compound design files. Because only the current version supports the latest CBL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CABLABEL R2+ update.
- To make sure that your CBL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CBL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
