What is a CBM file?

CBM files mostly belong to VICE. CBM files are binary files that serve different functions depending on their origin. The most common use is as a compressed bitmap file. This type of file is sometimes called a PowerMock binary data file and is linked with systems like VICE.

How to open a CBM file

You need a suitable software like VICE to open a CBM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert a CBM file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, ...

CBM file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the CBM files looks like this:

The file type with the extension 'CBM' is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all CBM files use the same file format, which have the signature PMBC`. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 4 KB and 490 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords PMBC` are typical for these files.
• 15% of all CBM files store the data in the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 10 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. The file name CB.cbm is characteristic of these files.
