Opening CPO Files
The CPO file type is primarily associated with Canon CPO-Viewer.
What is a CPO file?
Files with a CPO extension do not have a single definition. Their purpose varies with the software that creates them. Below are some specific uses:
- Canon Printer Output: These files are built with a Microsoft Compound format and are used by Canon Creative Park Express. They often store image data and function much like a clipboard for printer output. For more details, visit Canon Creative Park Express.
- Fire Alarm Configuration: Some CPO files serve as configuration files for fire alarm panels. They store settings for systems provided by companies such as Connexion and Protec AlgoRex. Information can be found at Apollo Fire.
- SAS Compressed Data: In some cases, the CPO extension is used to indicate SAS compressed data files. These files are used within data analysis environments and require SAS software. Visit SAS for additional details.
- 3D Collision Models: Another application is in 3D graphics. Here, the CPO file may define collision models used in 3D Studio Max, assisting with collision detection in simulations and games. More info is available at Autodesk 3ds Max Overview.
FilExt.com note: If you have a CPO file, it is key to know its origin. Understanding which system created it will guide you in choosing the right program to open or view the file.
How to open CPO files
You need a suitable software like Canon CPO-Viewer to open a CPO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CPO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CPO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CPO file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the CPO files is as follows:
CPO is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in CPO files are:
- 60% of all CPO files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains sections Contents, Header, Images and Thumbnail. The file size is in the range of 130 KB to 10 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago. These files can be linked to sudop and page.
- 15% of all CPO files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "[general] application=Connexion version=3 subversion" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 15 KB with most files being between 12 KB and 21 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as [binary], [general], [panelsettings], application=Connexion, subversion, version=3, Alphaversion= and [loopdevices].
All the rest of the CPO files (25%) have different formats. Sometimes used for objects. Just click the "Choose your .cpo file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CPO file is.
Technical Data for CPO File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a cpo container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CPO files
- Associate the CPO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest CPO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Canon CPO-Viewer update.
- To make sure that your CPO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CPO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
