CWL file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the CWL files:

CWL is rarely used as a file extension and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in CWL files are:

• 15% of all CWL files start with the bytes 03 03 crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 35 KB and 720 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ICAF.
• 15% of all CWL files start with the magic bytes 02 00 41, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The files are on average 390 KB in size and range from 16 KB to 690 KB. A common filename is en-common.cwl. Files like these are sometimes connected to only.
