What is a CXD file?

CXD files mostly belong to Cognex VisionPro. CXD files are not a single file type. They represent different kinds of data stored under the same extension.

Cognex spreadsheet: This version is used by Cognex VisionPro. It holds measurement and analysis data from machine vision tasks and is also known as the Cognex Designer Vision file.

Compix microscopy data file: In this case, the file uses the Microsoft Compound format. It stores imaging and analysis data for confocal microscope applications, sometimes linked with Olympus FluoView systems.

How to open a CXD file

You need a suitable software like Cognex VisionPro to open a CXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. • 40% of all CXD files start with the magic bytes 'CP:, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 240 bytes to 63 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as VERSION, 'CHARSET:   [iso-8859-1] [English] and 0B0000000000000000000000. Files like these are about calib, calibration, count and write.
• 20% of all CXD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are Field Data, Comments, Compix, File Info and Object Data. The file size is in the range of 1 MB to 1 GB. These files can be linked to data and time.
