Opening a DAC File
The DAC file type is primarily associated with Dolby Atmos Designer.
What is a DAC file?
This file extension, DAC, serves several specialized purposes rather than a single function. It can hold different types of data depending on the software that creates it.
- Dolby Atmos Configuration Backup: This type uses a ZIP structure to store audio system settings for Dolby Atmos Designer. It is a backup file that preserves configuration data.
- Geoid Height Data File: In this case the file contains geospatial information used by GMT. It provides geoid height measurements and is sometimes called a Digital Audio Control data file. More details can be found at GeographicLib.
- Dance Animation or Choreography Data: Some DAC files record dance motions and choreography details, which software like Dance eJay or DanceStepMania use.
- FEFLOW Computational Results File: Other DAC files carry the output from hydrological and groundwater modeling performed by FEFLOW.
FilExt.com notes: Each file variant uses its own internal structure. Check file headers or open the file with its associated program to view its contents. Always keep an original copy before making changes.
How to open DAC files
You need a suitable software like Dolby Atmos Designer to open a DAC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DAC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DAC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DAC files:
- Dolby Atmos Designer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DAC files are often referred to as Dolby Atmos Designer data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- DATS (Data File) by Prosig Ltd.Data captured by data acquisition device (often noise & vibration).
- Pclhandler
- Sound FileTI/MIT DAC format - byte reversed ADC file. This file format is classified as Audio.
DAC file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the DAC files is as follows:
The DAC file extension is rather rarely used and includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 10% of all DAC files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one DAC file. 3 to 14 compressed files with names like \backup\ACMainsCommand.json, \backup\AES67SessionList.json, \backup\AlertMessageList.json, \backup\ChannelConfigSettings.json, \backup\DACSettings.json, \backup\DmaDiscoveryInfo.json, \backup\GlobalDelay.json, \backup\HardwareInfo.json, \backup\NetworkSettings.json, \backup\Password.json, \backup\ScreenName.json, \backup\SpeakerProcessingBasicSe, \cp850\parameters.txt and \cp850\settings.tgz are common. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. DAC files can be up to 460 KB in size, but are often around 3 KB - 290 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: dolbyAtmosConfiguration. The following filename is common: 1.dac.
- 8% of all DAC files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "05 51 05 51 05 51 05 51 05 51 05 51 05 51 05 51" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 2 MB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. A common filename is WW15MGH.DAC.
All other DAC files (82%) have no consistent format, such as FEFLOW. They are often associated with player, pikachu, data, resource, created or center. If you want to find out which format your DAC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .dac file to analyze".
Technical Data for DAC File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
a dac data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DAC files
- Associate the DAC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest DAC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Dolby Atmos Designer update.
- To make sure that your DAC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DAC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
