The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. DBO is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type has no uniform or dominant file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in DBO files:

20% of all DBO files belong to dBASE compiled Object program. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data.
