All about DBO Files
The DBO file type is primarily associated with CryEngine.
What is a DBO file?
Some DBO files are used as game model files in the CryEngine. These files store 3D model data for game objects. For more details, visit the CryEngine website.
Other DBO files work as database system components. For instance, they appear as dBASE object files in the dBASE IV management system (dBASE website), and as SQLite database files (SQLite website) sometimes even for mobile device applications.
Additionally, some DBO files are used for debugging. The GHS Multi IDE uses Green Hills debug object files to aid in software development (GHS website).
There are also cases where these files hold engineering data, such as the design of heat exchangers produced by HTRI Xchanger Suite (HTRI website).
How to Manage:
How to open a DBO file
You need a suitable software like CryEngine to open a DBO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DBO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DBO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DBO files:
- CryEngine
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DBO files are often referred to as CryEngine games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

DBO file format details:
To view or edit DBO files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the DBO files comes to the following conclusion:
DBO is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type has no uniform or dominant file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in DBO files:
- 20% of all DBO files belong to dBASE compiled Object program. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 640 bytes to 21 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. These files can be linked to menu.
- 15% of all DBO files have the same signature 08 00 00 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. DBO files can be up to 6 MB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 2 MB. The files contain the following words: MAGICDBO&.
All other DBO files (65%) have no consistent format, often e.g. DB/TextWorks Database Directory, SQL, JetDB and GHS. The category is backup, ethylene or dades. If you want to find out which format your DBO file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .dbo file to analyze".
Technical Data for DBO File Extension
a dbo object file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DBO files
- Associate the DBO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open object files. Because only the current version supports the latest DBO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CryEngine update.
- To make sure that your DBO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DBO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
