All about DEMO Files
The DEMO file type is primarily associated with Game engine.
What is a DEMO file
These files contain a log of commands and events that recreate a game session when replayed in the original game engine.
Main use:
Use the game or app that created the file to view its replay. If the file is ZIP compressed, first extract it with a file archiver. For more info on game demos, check out the Counter-Strike Blog or visit the Teeworlds website.
FilExt.com note: Few realize these files record in-game commands rather than actual video data, which helps reduce file size and allows flexible playback.
How to open a DEMO file
You need a suitable software like Game engine to open a DEMO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DEMO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DEMO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DEMO file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the DEMO files is as follows:
The DEMO file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in DEMO files:
- 30% of all DEMO files start with the magic bytes HD, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. DEMO files can be up to 12 MB in size, but are often around 1 MB - 10 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: 7VUh.
- 20% of all DEMO files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one DEMO file. The average file count is 12 with most DEMO files containing between 6 - 28 compressed files. Customary file names are data. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. Most of these files are 19 KB to 1 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: images. An example of a file name is %23n2-ss-35.demo. These files can be linked to boxedproduct, wordpress, slider and width.
All other DEMO files (50%) have no consistent format, such as ELF and DKGT. These files are often connected to makefile. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DEMO file!
