Opening DFR Files
The DFR file type is primarily associated with Dymo Label Software.
What is a DFR file?
DFR files serve different roles based on the software that creates them. They are data files that preserve structured information in distinct formats.
Common types include:
- DataFlex Report: Used by Dymo Label Software (Dymo) to generate print reports and labels.
- Financial Data: Known as the Data Format Reporter file, these files handle transaction or reporting data in financial systems.
- Electrochemical Data: Produced by Gamry instruments for experiment measurements, these files are managed with Gamry Echem Analyst (Gamry).
- macOS Deep Freeze Files: In plist format, these files store system or application configuration data on macOS, linked with Apple Preview (Apple).
FilExt.com notes: Each variant requires its own dedicated software. To open a DFR file, use the program that originally created it. If the file type is not obvious, a quick look at its header with a text editor may provide clues.
How to open a DFR file
You need a suitable software like Dymo Label Software to open a DFR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DFR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DFR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DFR files:
- Dymo Label Software
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DFR files are often referred to as Dymo Label Software data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Visual DataFlex (Visual DataFlex) by Data Access WorldwideDFR is the licence file for Visual DataFlex; an object-oriented, 4th Generation (4G) programming language geared towards creating database and client / server type applications. DFR files verify the number of users against the DataFlex license in a particular enviornment. DFR files are named NUMBER.DFR where NUMBER represents the serial code for that installation. Whilst the Personal Version of DataFlex can be downloaded for free, Commercial Licenses require a fee-based subscription. This file format is classified as Archive.
DFR file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DFR files looks like this:
The DFR file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all DFR files use the same file format, which have the signature 25 8C 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 440 bytes to 500 bytes. The file type is relatively new. The keywords DEFAULT.DFR are typical for these files. A usual file name is DEFAULT.DFR.
- 15% of all DFR files start with the magic bytes *DFRBEG, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. DFR files are between 2 KB and 290 KB in size. The keywords DFRBEG, FREQ and DAILY are typical for these files.
All the rest of the DFR files (50%) have different formats. Files like these are sometimes linked to defect or report. Just click the "Choose your .dfr file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your DFR file is.
Technical Data for DFR File Extension
a dfr data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DFR files
- Associate the DFR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest DFR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Dymo Label Software update.
- To make sure that your DFR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DFR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
