Opening a DGM File
The DGM file type is primarily associated with Specialized diagram/CAD apps.
What is a DGM file?
For example:
- Mplus Data Input: Used by Mplus for statistical models. More details at StatModel.
- Electrical Diagrams: XML-based files that store schematic data, used with systems from PowerLogic ION Enterprise and Schneider Electric.
- Flowchart Diagrams: Often stored in a Microsoft Compound format or UTF-8 text, these files are created by tools like Flow! or XtraDiagram (DevExpress Diagram Control).
- Digital Ground Models: Represent terrain data for mapping. They are used by 12d Model. Visit 12d.com for more info.
- Traffic Signal Timing Files: These files store timing and schematic data for traffic studies, and are used with Synchro Studio and TransModeler. See Cubic.
- CAD Drawings: Some DGM files hold drawing information that can be opened with AutoCAD or MicroStation Reprographics Manager. More details at Autodesk.
How to Open: Use the specific software that created the file. Some versions are text-based (such as those in XML or UTF-8) and can be inspected with a text editor, but full rendering requires the dedicated program.
FilExt.com note: Even though these files share the same extension, their internal structure and use can vary significantly.
How to open DGM files
You need a suitable software like Specialized diagram/CAD apps to open a DGM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DGM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DGM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DGM files:
- Specialized diagram/CAD apps
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DGM files are often referred to as Specialized diagram/CAD apps data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Arcland Flow Chart Diagram
- Digital Geospatial Metadata File
- Freelance Graphics (Diagram) by IBMThis was a Lotus product. Lotus was bought out by IBM.
DGM file format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the DGM files comes to the following conclusion:
The DGM file extension is not widely used. Such a file covers different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all DGM files start with the bytes VERSION 1., which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are 1 KB to 10 KB in size, with a median of 4 KB. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: FILE, INPUT, DATA, NAMES, VARIABLE, TITLE and VERSION 1.1.0. A common filename is mptext1.dgm. Such files sometimes refer to model, mediation and factor.
- 15% of all DGM files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The average file size is 99 KB with most files being between 18 KB and 400 KB in size. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <IonDiagram>, <PMLDiagram xmlns="x-schemas:x-pmlsystem:/schemas/iondiagrams.1.1.xml">, <SaveInformation>, <UserDiagramInfo> and <!--Schneider Electric.--> are typical for these files.
All other DGM files (45%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. DOC, DGM and TSPPDgm. The category is control, esteira, slow, proposed or rdgm. If you want to find out what your DGM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a dgm diagram file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DGM files
- Associate the DGM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open diagram files. Because only the current version supports the latest DGM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Specialized diagram/CAD apps update.
- To make sure that your DGM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DGM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
