Opening a DPE File
The DPE file type is primarily associated with Disk Protect Plus.
What is a DPE file?
They can be used as an encrypted document container with Disk Protect Plus. This means the file holds data in a sealed, password-protected format.
They may also work as a design project file that is internally built as a ZIP archive. In this case the file holds design data and is used by software like Lectra Modaris. For more details on this use case, please visit Lectra.
Another role is as a dielectric test data file used by the DPE Analyzer to store measurement data related to ferroelectric hysteresis.
This file is essentially a container that keeps different types of data secure or organized.
How do you open DPE files?
You need a suitable software like Disk Protect Plus to open a DPE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DPE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DPE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DPE file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DPE files:
The DPE file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 50% of all DPE files use the same file format, which have the signature DPFE. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 170 KB with most files being between 13 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: DPFE. Files like these have the following tags: docx and xlsx.
- 25% of all DPE files internally use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one DPE file. A DPE file can contain up to 70 files (mostly 4 - 23). Common included file names are id. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. DPE files are between 2 KB and 390 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: design/ and design/data/.
All the rest of the DPE files (25%) have different formats. Often described as microf. If you want to find out what your DPE file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

- Associate the DPE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest DPE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Disk Protect Plus update.
