What is an FDS file?

FDS files mostly belong to Dedicated applications. FDS files are not a single standard format. Their content is defined by the software or device that created them and may include very different data.

Fluorescence Data: These files can store spectroscopic measurements from Hitachi F-7000 instruments. They record raw fluorescence data that is interpreted with Hitachi analysis tools. More details are available at Hitachi High-Tech.

Simulation Input: In some cases, an FDS file carries configuration data for the Fire Dynamics Simulator. It holds parameters for modeling fire behavior and should be opened with simulation software. Information can also be seen on the NIST site.

Game ROM Image: Certain FDS files are disk images from the Nintendo Famicom Disk System. These files contain game code and data and are used by emulators such as FCEUX to run classic games.

Database/Backup and Document Formats: Some FDS files serve as compressed backups for financial databases or hold form definitions for client/server systems. Others relate to secure document storage linked to legacy floppy disk systems.

How can I open an FDS file?

You need a suitable software like Dedicated applications to open an FDS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FDS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FDS file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. FDS is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in FDS files:

• 25% of all FDS files have the same signature IIHIDTAG. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. FDS files can be up to 27 KB in size, but are often around 7 KB - 19 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as IIHIDTAG and F-7000 FL Spectrophotometer. Files like these are about data, prot and ugml.
• 9% of all FDS files are associated with Famicom Disk System disk image. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 65 KB to 750 MB in size, with a median of 40 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. FDS_Version = 1, HeaderSectionSizes_Bytes and HeaderSize_Bytes. Such files sometimes refer to channel.

The remaining 66% of all FDS files are files with no common format, often, for example, FireDAC database, ZIP, NINTENDO, FOCTF, HEAD and HDR.
