Opening FPD Files

The FPD file type is primarily associated with OrCAD.

FPDFile Extension FPD
File extension: FPD
File type:  footprint definition

What is an FPD file?

FPD files mostly belong to OrCAD by Cadence. An FPD file is a project created with Front Panel Designer, an enclosure front panel and milled parts design program. This file contains the specifications, measurements, materials, finish, color, and CNC programing that make up the front panel design of a product. This file specifies a client's order details when ordering the physical product (enclosure's front panel) from Front Panel Express. Another type of FPD file contains the footprint definition of a printed circuit board (PCB) created with OrCAD electronics design software. Framework Pascal compiler for Pascal programming language saves a compiled unit in an FPD file.

How do you open FPD files?

You need a suitable software like OrCAD to open an FPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FPD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FPD files:

  1. OrCAD by Cadence
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FPD files are often referred to as OrCAD cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Front Panel Designer (project) by Front Panel Express
Front Panel Designer is a computer-aided design program for creating and ordering the front panel of electronic product enclosures. It saves a design project in an FPD file. This file format is classified as CAD.
  3. TMT Pascal (compiled unit) by Framework
Framework Pascal (previously TMT Pascal) is a DOS and Windows compiler for programs written in Pascal programming language. It uses an FPD file to store a compiled unit. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: TMT Pascal

FPD file format details:

To find out what program is needed to open FPD files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the FPD files produces the following result:

As a file extension, FPD isn't very common and is primarily used by a single program. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other FPD files (24%) have different formats, often, for example, FPD. They are often associated with bottom, multi or demo. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your FPD file!

How to solve problems with FPD files

  • Associate the FPD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open footprint definitions. Because only the current version supports the latest FPD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Cadence manufacturer website after an available OrCAD update.
  • To make sure that your FPD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .FPD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
