Opening a GCR File
The GCR file type is primarily associated with Ghostscript.
What is a GCR file?
Some GCR files are created as PNG image files. These follow a raster graphics format often generated by Ghostscript and can be opened with image tools like GIMP. For more details, visit Ghostscript.
Other GCR files store measurement data from devices such as Gossen Metrawatt equipment or cutting plotters used by systems like Graphing Calculator 3D. These files package technical data in a binary format.
A further group of GCR files holds chromatography results. They use the Microsoft Compound File structure to record gas chromatogram data, and are used with software such as Agilent ChemStation. More information is available at Agilent.
How to open a GCR file
You need a suitable software like Ghostscript to open a GCR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GCR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GCR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GCR files:
- Ghostscript
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GCR files are often referred to as Ghostscript data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GlowCode (Profiling Results) by Electric Software, Inc.This is a file you can visualize using the GlowCode reViewer tool which is part of the GlowCode 5.0 product. This file format is classified as XML.
- Visual EPR COSEUL.EXE Output
GCR file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the GCR files:
The GCR file extension is not common and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all GCR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 100 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IHDR, pHYs and IDATx. These files are often associated with person-related data.
- 25% of all GCR files are based on the well-known config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. GCR files can be up to 1 KB in size, but are often around 830 bytes - 1 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Text=, [Cursor1], [Cursor2], [Cursor3], X=-Inf, Y=0.000000E+0, [Cursor4] and [Cursor5]. Examples of file names are 20180601.Gcr or GL840_01_2020-06-01 10-30.gcr. Files like these are sometimes connected to device.
All other GCR files (45%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats exist: DOC. If you want to find out which format your GCR file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gcr file to analyze".
Technical Data for GCR File Extension
a gcr data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GCR files
- Associate the GCR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GCR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Ghostscript update.
- To make sure that your GCR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GCR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
