What is a GDM file?
Secondary Use:
A smaller number of these files are used as General Digital Music files. In this context, they contain game data music information.
For additional information, see the Game Data Music Wiki.
How to Open and View:
Use the dedicated Giants Editor to open and modify density map files. If the file is a digital music file, a specialized audio tool may be needed.
FilExt.com note: Advanced users can explore the file structure with a hex editor to view hidden metadata that some game engines use.

GDM file format details:
To view or edit GDM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the GDM files looks like this:
The GDM file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all GDM files use the same file format, which have the signature !MDF. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 760 KB with most files being between 120 KB and 4 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: !MDF. Examples of file names are cultivator_density.gdm or fruit_density.gdm. These files are attributed to density, cultivator, fruit, height, terrain, detail, stones, fruits and weed.
- 3% of all GDM files are General Digital Music / MegaZeux module files. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 170 KB with most files being between 39 KB and 260 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as GMFS and Unknown.
The remaining 7% of all GDM files are files with no common format. Often described as ground. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your GDM file!
