All about GPH Files
The GPH file type is primarily associated with Stata.
What is a GPH file?
The files may serve different roles depending on their origin:
- Stata Graph File: Holds the graph output from statistical analysis. Visit Stata's website for more details.
- Plotting Data File: Created by tools such as VSM software or GraphPad Prism. Information for these files is available on sites like this page.
- XML Diagram File: Some versions use XML to define graph or diagram structures, as seen with IBM Rational Software Architect.
- GPS Data File: Certain GPH files store Garmin GPS data, used by Garmin BaseCamp. More info can be seen on the Garmin BaseCamp page.
- .NET Chart File: Files made with .NET frameworks such as ZedGraph contain chart settings and data.
- Spectrum Analysis Data File: A few files store data from Raman spectroscopy, as seen in PEPEGraph output.
FilExt.com tip: This file is not a standard image format and requires its corresponding application for viewing and editing.
How do you open GPH files?
You need a suitable software like Stata to open a GPH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GPH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GPH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GPH file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the GPH files produces the following result:
GPH is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all GPH files are associated with Stata Graph. These files are not plain text files, so they also contain binary data. The files are often between 5 KB and 65 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as StataFileTM:00001:01000:LiveGPH: , command: twoway, *! classname: twowaygraph_g and *! family: twoway. Examples of file names are Graph.gph. These files are attributed to figure, plot, histogram, hist, scatter, combined, high and math.
- 7% of all GPH files save the data in config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 2.5 KB to 2.6 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as [Global], [X_Axis], firstRecord=1, isLogScale=0, lastRecord, recordSelectionMode=0, timeOffsetMode=2, timeDisplayUnits=2, isAutoScale=1, max=, min=, currentRecord=-1, dataGroup=0 and itemIndex=3. Files like these have the following tags: sample, capsule, hysteresis and under.
All other GPH files (33%) have no uniform format, the following 14 formats exist: XML, .NET, DOC, GDBF, age, PEPEGraph, parent, fixedacidity, num and Graph. These files are often connected to diagram, testfile, common, data, lastscan, survival, kaplan, last, line or mvst. You can get all the details of your GPH file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .gph file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with GPH files
- Associate the GPH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open graph files. Because only the current version supports the latest GPH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Stata update.
- To make sure that your GPH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GPH file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
