What is an HDI file?

HDI files mostly belong to HDIutil. HDI files are disk image files that hold an exact copy of a disk's data.
They are used in several ways:

PC-98/PC-9801 Disk Images: Many HDI files capture game and system data for older Japanese computers. They act as a container for game disks.

Macintosh Disk Image Files: Some are formatted as Macintosh disk images, useful for mounting or emulating old Mac systems.

Installer/Driver Packages: Certain HDI files store installation data. For example, one type contains Hewlett-Packard plotter driver data used by software such as AutoCAD. More details can be found at the Autodesk website.

The file works by replicating the complete structure of a physical disk, including its file system.
Using a specialized mounting tool or emulator (like HDIutil or DiskImageMounter) is necessary to open and view these files.

How to open HDI files

You need a suitable software like HDIutil to open an HDI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HDI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HDI file directly in the browser:. HDI file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The HDI file extension mainly uses a defined HDI format. The file formats most commonly found in HDI files are:

• 70% of all HDI files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00 00" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 5 MB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Th01.hdi or [ritokatsuga] th01 - hrtp.hdi is a typical file name. These files are attributed to ritokatsuga, hrtp, responsive, prayers, highly, touhou, story, mystic and square.
• 10% of all HDI files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 22 MB to 85 MB. The file name YU-NO.HDI or KAKYUSEI.hdi is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about utau, special, shoujo, disk, hate and kono.
