What is an HMA file

HMA files mostly belong to ATLAS.ti. The HMA file extension is used by different specialized programs to store distinct types of data. Its internal structure varies based on the originating application.

ATLAS.ti ATDATA files: These files are used within ATLAS.ti to store project data. They are sometimes noted as Hidden Markov Model data files. More details can be found on the ATLAS.ti website.

tagged Image File Format / Magellan GPS Track files: In some cases, HMA files hold tagged image data or GPS track data. Such files may be opened with image viewers or mapping software.

How to open an HMA file

You need a suitable software like ATLAS.ti to open an HMA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. HMA file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the HMA files:

HMA is seldom used as a file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in HMA files:

• 30% of all HMA files are Hi-MD Minidisc ATRAC3 files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 140 MB in size and range from 1 MB to 700 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: ATX. ATDATA07.HMA is a typical file name.
• 10% of all HMA files are associated with Hi-MD Minidisc track index. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 320 KB to 320 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as TIF. Such HMA files store data about trkidx and rkidx.

All other HMA files (60%) have different formats, often e.g. Hi-MD Minidisc DRM keyfile, Hi-MD Minidisc key container, Hi-MD Minidisc PCM audio data container and Hi-MD Minidisc MPEG audio data container.
