Opening an IMI File
The IMI file type is primarily associated with ImageMagick.
What is an IMI file?
It may also be a file that uses a ZIP container for an Image Markup file. Here the file holds markup data, annotations, or metadata inside a compressed archive. This variant works with tools such as ImageMagick and is sometimes used with applications like Aperio ImageScope or ABBYY FineReader.
FilExt.com tip: Understanding which structure your file uses is key because a CAP-based IMI file needs a compound file viewer, while a ZIP-based IMI file can be opened with standard archive tools or specialized imaging software.
How to open an IMI file
You need a suitable software like ImageMagick to open an IMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IMI file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the IMI files looks like this:
IMI is not a common file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 30% of all IMI files belong to IncrediMail Image. The files are using the common file format CAP. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 28 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MSCF and content.ini. Such files are related to christmas and hello.
- 25% of all IMI files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one IMI file. Such a ZIP file contains 2 to 4 files. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 290 KB and 3 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. annotation. Files like these have the following tags: image.
All other IMI files (45%) have no uniform format, such as dat. If you want to find out which format your IMI file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .imi file to view this image".

an imi container is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IMI files
- Associate the IMI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open containers. Because only the current version supports the latest IMI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ImageMagick update.
- To make sure that your IMI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IMI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
