Opening an INP File
The INP file type is primarily associated with Abaqus.
What is an INP file?
How to open an INP file
You need a suitable software like Abaqus to open an INP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your INP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a INP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

INP file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the INP files produces the following result:
The INP file extension is very common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all INP files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains several sections with names like DocumentInfo and InPage100. The files are often between 13 KB and 780 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. These files are attributed to urdu, class, paper, nama, application, islamiat, page and book.
- 4% of all INP files start with the bytes 2A 48 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 100 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 4 MB. The keywords *Heading, Generated by, Abaqus, Job name, *Preprint, echo=NO, model=NO, history=NO, contact=NO, Model name, Part, ** PARTS, *Node and Model-1 are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Job-1.inp. Files like these have the following tags: model, rigidbodymotion, cylinder, thermal and beam.
All other INP files (31%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. MAME Input, SQL, TITLE and CSPLIGHT. They are often associated with profile, fatura, data, agreement, form or bank. If you want to find out which format your INP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .inp file to view".

an inp input data is a special file format by Dassault and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with INP files
- Associate the INP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open input data files. Because only the current version supports the latest INP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dassault manufacturer website after an available Abaqus update.
- To make sure that your INP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .INP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
