Opening an LFS File
The LFS file type is primarily associated with Mimecast.
What is an LFS file
These files are not designed for everyday user edits. Instead, they act as structured data containers that are processed by dedicated software. In some cases, an LFS file may also be used as a game data file, although that usage follows a different internal organization.
- Format: XML-based, making the content readable in a plain text editor.
- Primary Usage: Stores metadata and file references for Mimecast's large file management system.
- Alternate Role: Occasionally serves as a container for game data.
- Handling: Best processed with Mimecast tools; manual inspection is possible using a text editor if needed.
FilExt.com tip: More details can be found at the Mimecast Community.
How to open LFS files
You need a suitable software like Mimecast to open an LFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LFS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Mimecast
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LFS files are often referred to as Mimecast data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Mimecast Secure Email (Email Attachment) by MimecastLFS stands for "Large File Send" and is offered by Mimecast's cloud-based Secure Email Gateway. A LFS file is an XML file and contains information about email attachments, e.g. file name, path, title. The text file can be viewed with any text editor line "Windows Editor". This file format is classified as Attachment.
LFS file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the LFS files is as follows:
The LFS extension is very commonly used. This LFS file itself is among the most popular common file types and mainly uses a defined LFS format. The file formats most commonly found in LFS files are:
- 90% of all LFS files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 320 bytes to 450 bytes in size, with a median of 380 bytes. The file type is very recent. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as LargeFileAttachmentInfo, <MimecastLFS>, LargeFileName, Users and DisplayName. Files like these are about report, bundle, documents, docx, form, plan, xlsx and pptx, and often consist of personal data.
- 6% of all LFS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "RDLXªºîþ" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 7 KB to 10 MB in size. The files contain the following words: RDLX. The following filename is common: 20180601a0.pack.yz2.lfs. These files can be linked to pack, udas, bcon, option, adjust, press and start.
All other LFS files (4%) have no uniform format. Files like these are sometimes linked to letter, signed, records, project, dated, agreement or lease. If you want to find out what your LFS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with LFS files
- Associate the LFS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data containers. Because only the current version supports the latest LFS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Mimecast update.
- To make sure that your LFS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LFS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
