What is a LU file?

LU files mostly belong to Lua interpreter. LU files have multiple uses.

Lua Source Code: These files contain Lua scripts. They are stored as simple text and can be edited in any text editor or run with a Lua interpreter. For more details, see the official Lua website.

Game Data Files: Some LU files hold game data. Examples include data for game engines like the Luminous Engine or resource containers in games such as LittleBigPlanet and Left 4 Dead 2. They may include level data, localization content, or other game-specific information.

How to open a LU file

You need a suitable software like Lua interpreter to open a LU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the LU files:

As a file extension, LU isn't very common and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in LU files:

• 35% of all LU files start with the bytes 1B 4C 75 61, which are crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. LU files are between 1 KB and 420 KB in size. The file type is very recent. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. LuaQ. Examples of file names are main.lu or config.lu. Files like these are sometimes connected to data, classes, town, libs, optimized, battle, list and maps.
• 7% of all LU files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "01 70 73 33 04 10 00 00 27 66 86 F2" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 3 KB and 6 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ITCRAP, characters_shared_resources.lu and naughtybear_vram.lu. The following filename is common: naughtybear.lu.
