What is a MEG file?

MEG files mostly belong to MEGA by MEGA Team. MEG file format is a proprietary file format associated with the MEGA freeware application from Pennsylvania State University.

• Main Use: MEGA (short for Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis) is a software used in analyzing gene sequence data from various species or multigene families to test and validate evolutionary relationships among them by statistically validating the connection between their DNA and proteins. MEGA software uses MEG files for this purpose. The data in the MEG files are stored in a plain text format and consists of genetic sequence information like DNA codes or population-based genetic distance data files. MEGA software, that opens MEG files, is proprietary freeware and can be installed on Windows PCs and Macs. MEGA software can convert other genetic data formats such as FASTA, PHYLIP, GCG, NEXUS, CLUSTAL, PIR, NBRF, MSF, IG, and XML into MEG files which can then be analyzed further using the program.
• Other Uses: MEG files have also been used by Star Wars: Empire at War computer game developed by LucasArts. These MEG files function as game archiver containers storing other game data in an uncompressed format.

How to open MEG files

You need a suitable software like MEGA to open a MEG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
