What is an NWK file?

NWK files mostly belong to FigTree. NWK files are mostly used to hold phylogenetic tree data in the Newick format. They use a plain text notation with nested parentheses to show how species or items are related.

Most NWK files describe evolutionary trees, where branch lengths and clade relationships are encoded simply as text.

A smaller number of NWK files store network configuration data and may use ZIP compression.

Programs like FigTree (see FigTree webpage), TreeView X, and tools associated with Nextstrain (Nextstrain) are designed to parse and display these tree structures.

How to open NWK files

You need a suitable software like FigTree to open an NWK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Files like these are sometimes connected to nextstrain, ncov, global, timetree, tree, gisaid, america and north.
3% of all NWK files start with the bytes 28 53, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 69 bytes and 180 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Wuhan.
