What is an MTZ file?

MTZ files mostly belong to MIUI by Xiaomi. MTZ file extension is mainly used to store graphics themes used by MIUI, a firmware for Xiaomi Android devices. The MTZ file contains a theme which can include icons, tones, fonts, and other GUI customization utilities that define the appearance of the user interface of an Android device that has MIUI ROM installed on it. The MTZ extension is also used as a 3D scene format. An MTZ 3D scene file is a compressed file containing ASCII text written with XML-syntax to represent hierarchies, animation, and assets used to render the scene. Some data analysis and visualization software for visual molecular dynamics use MTZ file format to store reflection data. Contents of such MTZ files are subdivided into two sections: the header (containing metadata) and the data which contains a dataset that consists of a table where rows represent reflections and columns represent the various quantities of each reflection.

How to open an MTZ file

You need a suitable software like MIUI to open an MTZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MTZ file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The MTZ file extension is not common and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 75% of all MTZ files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one MTZ file. 4 to 30 compressed files with names like clock_2x4, com.android.contacts, com.android.mms, com.android.settings, com.android.systemui, com.miui.home, description.xml, icons, lockscreen and \wallpaper\ are common. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are often between 1 MB and 38 MB in size. Such files are related to miui, mtzfile, theme, font and color.
• 10% of all MTZ files use the same file format, which have the signature 40 23 01 04 00 04 10 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 560 bytes to 180 KB in size, with a median of 59 KB.
